June 2005 - New Website

At the Annual General Meeting on 18th April 2005, it was agreed that the group would change its name to the London Health and Safety Group.

Therefore, during August, the old London Occupational Health, Safety and Hygiene Group website will be extensively redeveloped and relaunched as the  www.londonhealthandsafetygroup.org.

June 2005 - Deluge of Spam

In the past few weeks, we have experienced severe difficulties with malicious email traffic, which obliged us to suspend all the email links on the website. An alternative link has now been re-established and should be used for all enquiries for the present time.  We apologise for any disruption that this may have caused.

16th May 2005 - Worker Participation

The seminar on "Worker Participation in Health and Safety" was a very successful and well attended meeting. As you can see from the photos below.

Sarah Page

The meeting was opened by Sarah Page, who gave the HSE's view on this important topic.
Then Rob Hancock presented the TUC's view on the contribution that can be made by workplace safety representatives. He also drew attention to the effectiveness of their training programmes.

Matt Dykes continued the theme with a description of the current arrangements for enhanced liaison with the HSE.

Audience

The question and answer session highlighted the audience's interest in the Australian system for issuing prohibition notices by safety representatives. The TUC is a strong advocate of this system. Whereas, an in-depth study by the HSE has resulted in no immediate plans for introducing similar legislation in this country.
The HSE was given a vote of thanks for their sponsorship of this event. Hence, everyone was able to enjoy the excellent facilities of The Diskus Conference Centre in Transport House.

21st February 2005 - Visit to the Thames Barrier

Members of the group braved chill winds and snow to go behind the scenes at the Thames Barrier. (To display their names, run your mouse pointer over their faces.)

Our guides Melvyn French and Ian Fallon explained how the barrier provides a vital defence against flooding in London. We then accompanied them onto the barrier itself, including a descent to the tunnel which connects the barrier piers, beneath the riverbed.
