Professor Dame Carol Black – Enabling Wellbeing, Health and Engagement in the Workplace

Employees who have good-quality jobs and are managed well will not only be happier, healthier and more fulfilled, but are also more likely to drive improved productivity, better products or services, and innovation”   (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, 2017)

The wellbeing of employees, a topic of increasing interest and concern,  relies upon conditions being present to enable staff to thrive and flourish.  Wellbeing should include not only physical wellbeing, e.g. safety at work, but also such things as psychological wellbeing, control, flexibility, fairness, equity, meaning and purpose.

These are the issues that will be discussed in this talk.

If there is a specific question you would like addressed please include it when you book onto the event. Kizzy will do her best to answer as many questions as possible in the time available.

18th June

Samantha Fisher- CDM- the good, bad and the ugly.

Samantha Fisher has a background in Highways Engineering and has delivered health and safety services, specialising in CDM, for about 20 years.  Sam has worked for Faithful + Gould, and Atkins, since 2001 and works on major infrastructure projects including nuclear new build, London 2012 and currently Euston Station Enabling Works for HS2.  She has seen the development of CDM Regulations as it has gone through change in an effort to improve the early consideration of health and safety for construction projects.  Things have definitely improved, says Sam, but there is an ongoing need for continuing awareness of what CDM is actually trying to achieve to counter balance the negative reports that it gets.  Sam lectures at Bath University and is an approved IOSH trainer, delivering training that guides all CDM duty holders through the tasks that will achieve good design risk management.  Early education about construction safety and good mentors will help us to achieve a safer built environment.

Tony Leech – KeepMoat – Breaking through the blancmange layer – how to engage with supervision and middle management

If you think you’re doing a good job at communicating but the message isn’t getting through then what could be the solution?

We often focus on either senior managers or shop floor operatives, what about the team in middle earth ?

Tony Leach is the UK Health and Safety Director at Engie , with over 20 years experience in the SHEQ environment and will be giving us an insight into how to tackle the middle tier of your organisation. How to improve the buy-in from top management and how to improve the flow of information throughout all levels. Tony will give you some practical suggestions on what’s worked within his teams to prevent information stagnation .

We all suffer from information overload so how do you make sure that the right message is reaching the right people in a timely manner ?

19th November

Greg Davies – Assurity Consulting  – Something in the Air?

Air quality is a hot topic currently for many reasons, but in health and safety terms asbestos and Legionella management remain two of the biggest talking points.

Mike Ayling, Consultancy Services Manager at Assurity Consulting, has over 25 years of experience in the asbestos industry and will give some helpful pointers on how to avoid the usual pitfalls within asbestos management. Anyone managing a building needs an asbestos management plan, but what should this information be based on? From an asbestos survey through a material assessment and a priority assessment, to a risk assessment and a management plan, do you have the right information to successfully manage asbestos within your building?

Greg Davies, Director of Market Development at Assurity Consulting, will pose the question, “If the 2002 Legionella outbreak in Barrow occurred today, what would be the outcome?”. As a retained expert for the second trial in 2006, Greg will present the evidence then ask the audience to apply the now not so new sentencing guidelines for an outcome, as well as assessing what lessons, if any, have been learnt over the last decade.

These interactive sessions will explore all the details to enable you to challenge your current processes and whether they are blowing hot or cold.

10th December

Jason Anker  MBE – P2B – Behavioural safety

In 1993 Jason Anker was paralysed from the waist down due to an avoidable accident at work when he was just 24 years old.  It took 16 years and the rockiest of roads before he could speak about that day and the impact it had. Jason speaks with raw emotion on the effects of that day on not only himself,  but his friends and family.  His honest and sometimes graphic account of the devastation it caused makes everyone in the room reflect on their own actions and how one lapse, one short cut can change their life forever.

Whilst the talk centres of Jason’s story , it is not about him , it’s about health and safety, attitude and a willingness to speak up

In 2015 Jason was awarded an MBE for his services to safety . In 2017 Jason was named one of the top 15 most influential people in UK health and safety. In 2018 he presents for the second time to the London Health and Safety Group.
