What do you do for your day job?   I look after Southern Sales for a H&S signage company.  Incorporating signage, tagging, lockout and pipemarking.

What is a typical day’s work for you?  Client and Site visits, discussing issues and coming up with good, practical & cost effective solutions.

How did you become a member of the London Safety Group committee?  I attended regular meetings and thought the meetings were very informative and relevant.  I promoted through to my clients and soon many joined … I was asked to become Membership Secretary and then became Deputy Chair.

What benefits do you feel that the Group bring for you?  A sense of belonging.  I love the networking and the fact that if you don’t know the answer to something, there’s always someone you can ask or who’s ‘been there’ and is willing to share their experiences.

What do you find the most interesting part of your role within the Group? Inclusion and networking.  The people I meet.  It’s amazing how many people get thrown into H&S or get it ”tagged onto” their day job.  They don’t know where to start and enjoy the fact that the Group is welcoming to those with limited H&S knowledge as well as those with Guru status!

What presents the most challenges? At the moment my role is in transition .. so the jury is out on that one 🙂

What’s your health and safety ‘soap-box’ subject? Don’t reinvent the wheel.  You’re probably not the first person or organisation to be faced with a specific issue .. speak to someone who’s been there.  You might not copy their solution, but it’s easier to find a starting point when you even know what you don’t want!  Communication! Communication! Communication!

What is your one piece of advice for a practising safety professional? Communication! Communication! Communication! and be enthusiastic.  Noone is inspired by someone dull.

One piece of advice for someone thinking of becoming a health and safety professional? Do it! It’s an exciting and evolving field.  You won’t get bored that’s for sure.

Finally something personal about you not related at all to h&s or your day job  e.g.. Played Rugby for England / Dated Jude Law before he became famous. No porkeys please and if you have a photo all the better! I used to spend my weekends with Chris Martin .. he lived in my village and I used to baby-sit for his little sister.  I last had a drink with him in the pub when he was telling me about this band he was in that was ‘going to be fantastic’  ..:)
